Capricorn Full Moon Spell Kit
In the early morning hours of the Capricorn Full Moon that took place on July 13, I sat on my rooftop deck in West LA reading Cosmos by Carl Sagan, when a particular paragraph wrapped its words around my heart and squeezed:
"A handful of sand contains about 10,000 grains, more than the number of stars we can see with the naked eye on a clear night. But the number of stars we can see only the tiniest fraction of the number of stars that are. What we see at night is the merest smattering of the nearest stars. Meanwhile, the Cosmos is rich beyond measure : the total number of stars in the universe is greater than all the grains of sand on all the beaches of planet Earth."
In that moment the Muse saw fit to visit me, dropping into my consciousness a calling that I felt I must urgently obey. And so, that evening at sunset I packed up a few jars, my pocket journal, and my garnet meatball, and headed to the beach to collect sand. Some beautifully fortuitous things happened as I made my way down to the beach:
As I pulled into a parking spot, the woman who had just been parked there drove past me and offered me her parking pass, which was valid until 9 pm. I do this myself whenever possible, so that karmic nod from the universe was an absolute delight. Then, as I crossed over the bike path to make my way to the shore, I did so at the exact moment that two of my dear friends whom I haven't see in some time were riding past on their bikes. We stopped and had a lovely chat. But I digress.
I sat in the sand, garnet meatball in hand, and watched the waves crash as I took note of every feeling and thought that came to my mind. I made promises to myself beneath the full moon, and with immense gratitude and conscious awareness gathered two jars of sand, which I then charged on the rooftop where the Muse had first made contact earlier that day.
The next day, the sand made its way to my altar, and was soon joined by a quartz bowl full of gorgeous top quality garnet pebbles. I chose garnet both intuitively and because of its grounding properties and unparalleled ability to bring us down from an existential ledge. That night I stayed up far past my bedtime deep diving garnet, ferociously taking notes and crafting a Capricorn Full Moon spell. As a poet and word witch, writing spells is one of my favorite things to do; I enter my zone of genius, my flow state, and graciously invite the Muse to accompany me.
What flowed from my pen that night was nothing short of magic. It was an evening I will never forget—one that both grounded me in cosmic trust and reinvigorated my creative juices. I needed this spell, and I think you might too.
Once complete, I designed a graphic version of the spell, which was then printed on 4x6 paper, ready to be hung in your sacred spaces or pressed between the pages of your journals and spellbooks. With intention and gratitude, I filled 44 small glass vials with garnet pebbles and full moon sand, and printed the Carl Sagan quote that inspired the kit onto 3x3 cards.
Which brings us here, now, to the inaugural Salt + Sorcery spell kit: an offering that I am blessed and honored to share with you. My intention is to ask the Muse to guide me in creating spell kits for each full moon going forward, and then offer them to you just before the following new moon.
I hope you will receive this offering with an open heart and a willingness to allow magic to work its way into your bones, down to the marrow. I won't advise you on how to use them because it simply isn't my place to do so, but I will encourage you to do whatever feels right.
It has been an honor to create these kits for you. Thank you accepting this magic.
Each Capricorn Full Moon Spell Kit contains:
- a 5ml glass vial of full moon sand + garnet, topped with a cork stopper (sand may shift during shipping and engulf the garnet. If this displeased you, you can easily separate them with a sifter.)
- a spell written and illustrated by me, printed on 4x6 80lb paper, rolled up and tied with twine (this spell will not be shown publicly on S+S but is yours to do with what you wish.)
- a quote from Cosmos, printed on 3x3 100lb cardstock
