alan watts once said that “where there are no flowers there are no bees, and where there are no bees there are no flowers. they’re really one organism. and so in the same way, everything in nature depends on everything else.”

i’ve been thinking a lot about this concept of mutualism, or “mutually arising” as it’s often referred to in eastern spirituality. flowers are in service of bees by providing pollen and nectar as sustenance; bees are in service of flowers by providing the means to reproduce via pollination. one does not give and the other take—they are in all ways mutually facilitative.

i have spent the entirety of my almost 4 decades on this earth choosing unavailable partners, extending unreciprocated energy, and falling deeply into unrequited love. i have found myself in the same destructive cycle over and over, playing out a toxic attachment dynamic resultant of early childhood abandonment trauma (thanks, mom!!). i have forced and clung and cried and clawed and ended up empty handed every single time.

this is not the way.

nature shows us the way, if we’re willing to listen. does a bee continue to occupy spaces where there are no flowers upon which to feed? and so i am once again and once and for all promising myself to choose what chooses me, and forgiving myself preemptively for the times i’ll no doubt break this promise—this is a spell, after all, and sometimes spells take time.
